  • About Candle & Soap Making
  • The Story of Cosmetics & The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 - Information & Opinions - Including YOURS () <p>There has been a LOT of talk on the soap, cosmetics and toiletry blogs lately about the <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://personalcaretruth.com/2010/07/safe-cosmetics-act-of-2010/">Safe Cosmetics Bill of 2010</a>. <strong>A lot!</strong> I can see why people are interested in it; we all want to be able to trust the products that we put on our bodies on a daily basis. That's probably the #1 reason that people start making their own soap in the first place - they want a more natural soap solution that's kinder to their skin than traditional soaps...and now, many of us are small business owners who manufacture soap and cosmetics. However, as I've said in many conversations on ingredients like soap making base oils and essential oils, just because something is natural does it mean it's safe to use on our skin. And just because something is synthetic, does it mean it's bad for us. <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/u/ua/ideafile/Safe-Cosmetics-Act-Of-2010-What-Is-Your-Opinion-The-Story-Of-Cosmetics.htm">Tell us what do you think?</a> Will this affect you? Will this affect your business?</p> <p>The loudest voice in the debate has come from a video called "The Story of Cosmetics" - a seemingly innocuous video full of scary things about the products we use. It presents cosmetics and toiletry products as full of carcinogens and toxins - that we must be protected from! Thank goodness that a rebuttal/critique video has come along to give another voice to the debate. I'm presenting both videos here. Take a few minutes to watch them...with an open mind. There are a number of links to other blog posts below that have more information as well. After you view the videos, <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/u/ua/ideafile/Safe-Cosmetics-Act-Of-2010-What-Is-Your-Opinion-The-Story-Of-Cosmetics.htm">please take a moment to give us your thoughts</a> about "The Story of Cosmetics", "The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010" and how you feel about the products you use and or make - My topic is "Saponification, superfatting and synergy." I'm going to talk about how different oils (and the fatty acids that make them up) each give different qualities to your soap recipes. Each oil (more correctly, each fatty acid - oils contain a mix of fatty acids) imparts different qualities to the final soap - <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/coldprocesssoapmaking/a/createcprecipe.htm">creating a soap recipe</a> is the art of balancing them to create the perfect bar of soap. Each one contributes its own unique fatty acid makeup, and hence, its own unique qualities to your soap.</p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/07/16/customizing-your-soap-recipes-by-knowing-your-soap-making-oils.htm">Customizing Your Soap Recipes by Knowing Your Soap Making Oils</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/">About.com Candle & Soap Making</a> on Friday, July 16th, 2010 at 12:16:18.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/07/16/customizing-your-soap-recipes-by-knowing-your-soap-making-oils.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/07/16/customizing-your-soap-recipes-by-knowing-your-soap-making-oils.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://candleandsoap.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/07/16/customizing-your-soap-recipes-by-knowing-your-soap-making-oils.htm&#038;zItl=Customizing Your Soap Recipes by Knowing Your Soap Making Oils">Email this</a></p>

In really hot weather, I will often make up a batch of <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/meltandpoursoapmaking/ss/peppermintice.htm">Peppermint Ice Soap</a>. It is a winter version of my <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/meltandpoursoapmaking/ss/mpmornmint.htm">Morning Mint Soap</a>, which has more of a summer feel to it. Both of them, though, have the cooling qualities of mint essential oil...and both of them will leave you feeling just a bit cooler when you get out of the shower. Not quite as good as air conditioning...or moving to Canada...but might just help a bit.</p> <p>Or, if you're in the mood to embrace the summertime, try one of these summertime essential oil blends:</p> <ul> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/summeressentialoilblends/r/orangepatchouliblend.htm">Orange &#38; Patchouli</a></li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/summeressentialoilblends/r/summergroveblend.htm">Summer Grove</a></li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/summeressentialoilblends/r/teawithvitablend.htm">Tea with Vita</a></li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/summeressentialoilblends/r/citrussootherblend.htm">Citrus Soother</a></li> <li><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/summeressentialoilblends/r/mysticessentialblend.htm">Mystic Essential Oil Blend</a></li> </ul><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/07/13/beating-the-heat-or-embrace-it.htm">Beating the Heat or Embrace It?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/">About.com Candle & Soap Making</a> on Tuesday, July 13th, 2010 at 15:44:33.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/07/13/beating-the-heat-or-embrace-it.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/07/13/beating-the-heat-or-embrace-it.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://candleandsoap.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/07/13/beating-the-heat-or-embrace-it.htm&#038;zItl=Beating the Heat or Embrace It?">Email this</a></p>

  • Blending Essential Oils for Soap Making and Candle Making () <div style="width: 180px; float: right; font-size: 0.8em; margin: 8px;"><img style="width: 180px; border: medium none;" src="http://0.tqn.com/d/candleandsoap/1/0/z/c/coloredessentialoilbottles.jpg" alt="essential oils" /><br /> <em>Robert Tardio / Getty Images</em></div> <p>If you're like me, if you've been making soap (or candles) for very long, you've acquired a cabinet full of essential and fragrance oils. One of the most exciting and rewarding things (for me at least) to do in soap (and candle) making is <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/fragrancesandaromatherapy/ht/htcustblend.htm">creating your own fragrance and essential oil blends</a>. It's been a few years since I've been making soap commercially, and I still have people asking about a couple of my most popular blends. But how does one come up with the various combinations of blends? Mostly by trial and error or by recommendations from books or other soapmakers. But I just came across a really great feature at the <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://www.rainbowmeadow.com">Rainbow Meadows</a> website. It's an <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://www.rainbowmeadow.com/infocenter/calc_eoblend/blendselect.php">Essential Oil Blend Recipe Search</a>. In addition to TONS of great information about essential oils, you enter in one or more essential oils that you have on your shelf, and it gives you all of the blends that they have that use those essential oils! Who knew that I could add some Bergamot to my Lavender and Ylang Ylang to get a "<a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://www.rainbowmeadow.com/infocenter/calc_eoblend/viewblends.php?BID=270">Waikiki Blend</a>"? Or a bit of Ginger to my Eucalyptus and Lemon to get "<a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://www.rainbowmeadow.com/infocenter/calc_eoblend/viewblends.php?BID=751">Steamy Blend</a>"? Beware, if you're at all like me, you'll spend quite a while searching through the various combinations, and then have a real hankering to go make some soap! (And remember - fragrance oils can be blended too.)</p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/07/02/blending-essential-oils-for-soap-making-and-candle-making.htm">Blending Essential Oils for Soap Making and Candle Making</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/">About.com Candle & Soap Making</a> on Friday, July 2nd, 2010 at 21:28:22.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/07/02/blending-essential-oils-for-soap-making-and-candle-making.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/07/02/blending-essential-oils-for-soap-making-and-candle-making.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://candleandsoap.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/07/02/blending-essential-oils-for-soap-making-and-candle-making.htm&#038;zItl=Blending Essential Oils for Soap Making and Candle Making">Email this</a></p>
  • Sand Candles and Summertime - A Perfect Pair () <p><img src="http://0.tqn.com/d/candleandsoap/1/5/n/H/sandfinal.JPG" alt="sand candles" width="185" align="right" />The first candle I ever made was in a second grade summer camp as a kid. It was in a program called the Beaver Bug Club. We dug holes in the sand box and the teacher poured the wax into them. I remember it as if it was last month. That candle has been sitting on my mom's curio shelf for over 30 years! And while it IS a great kid's project (if very carefully supervised), there are lots of fun things that even us grown ups can do with sand candles. Whether for a kid in your life...or the kid within you, I encourage you to try some sand candles this summer.</p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/06/29/sand-castles-and-summertime-a-perfect-pair.htm">Sand Candles and Summertime - A Perfect Pair</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/">About.com Candle & Soap Making</a> on Tuesday, June 29th, 2010 at 01:22:08.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/06/29/sand-castles-and-summertime-a-perfect-pair.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/06/29/sand-castles-and-summertime-a-perfect-pair.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://candleandsoap.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/06/29/sand-castles-and-summertime-a-perfect-pair.htm&#038;zItl=Sand Candles and Summertime - A Perfect Pair">Email this</a></p>
  • Summertime Candle Maker's Reading List () <p><img src="http://z.about.com/d/candleandsoap/1/6/_/8/Nicol.jpg" alt="" hspace="8" vspace="8" align="left" />In the hot and lazy days of summer, I love to relax on the couch with new soap and candle making books. It's also when I go back through old favorite books for candle and soap making inspiration in preparation for the fall and holiday candle and soap making. (Yes, Christmas is just 6 months away.) If you feel stuck with the same old votives and pillars and jelly jars and looking for a way to rekindle (pun intended) your love for candles? Here are the books I go back to when I'm looking for candle inspiration. They're both "how-to" books, as well as "idea" books that show the amazing multitude of ways that candles can be used to decorate, enlighten (again, pun intended) and otherwise brighten our homes and our lives. Sometimes the inspiration and "idea" books are more enlightening than the others though. You can learn both new ways to make candles, as well as learn new ways to use candles and incorporate them into your home. So put some music on, grab a glass of tea, light a candle, and get reading.</p><p style="background:#f5f3ef;border:1px solid #d5d0bf;clear:both;padding:.5em;"><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/06/27/summertime-candle-makers-reading-list.htm">Summertime Candle Maker's Reading List</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/">About.com Candle & Soap Making</a> on Sunday, June 27th, 2010 at 21:24:28.</p><p><a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/06/27/summertime-candle-makers-reading-list.htm">Permalink</a> | <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&#038;zu=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/06/27/summertime-candle-makers-reading-list.htm#gB3">Comment</a> | <a href="http://candleandsoap.about.com/gi/pages/shareurl.htm?PG=http://candleandsoap.about.com/b/2010/06/27/summertime-candle-makers-reading-list.htm&#038;zItl=Summertime Candle Maker's Reading List">Email this</a></p>
